Jeff and I are so excited to share that our little boy, Ellis, joined the world on Friday, January 18, at 8:26pm. Cuter than a peanut and weighing 6 lbs 14 oz!
He was born five days early, and delivered naturally at St Luke’s Roosevelt with the help of our doctor, Zhanna Shulina.
The entire experience was a wild ride! Early labor signs began that morning around 6:30am, but at 1pm active labor arrived. By 2:30 contractions were so intense we re-routed our doula, Anne Schuchman, to SLR and high-tailed it to the hospital. I was convicted we’d have the baby in the car!
I was only 4cm dilated in triage but moving quickly. Within 45 minutes I was fully dilated! Ellis’ heart rate was dipping too low during contractions, so we weren’t admitted to the Birthing Center. However, we had a very supportive natural labor in L&D.
After two hours of pushing, and many position changes, Doctor Shulina examined me and discovered Ellis was in a posterior position (which is why pushing was taking such a long time!). I had a lot of self doubt at this moment. My water had already broke. I was exhausted. I wondered if I needed an epidural, if I had enough energy left to push the baby down and out. But the whole team supported me sticking to our birth plan, helped me through. The nurse gave me an iv of fluids which really helped my energy and so I persevered for another two hours!
Ellis was finally born calmly and peacefully, face up and eyes wide open! The cord was tight around his neck so before he could be fully delivered Dr Shulina cut the cord, much like that video we watched. One benefit to so much pushing was no tearing at all!
Jeff was amazing – he was by my side the entire time, giving me strength I didn’t know I had. Anne was so impressed she thought he could be a doula! Doctor Shulina and Anne were also amazing. But what really got us through was the training and knowledge we gained from our bradley classes. People couldn’t believe we we’re first time parents!
